Guide to Atlanta Area School Boards of Education

Each Atlanta area county has a public school board of education to establish and approve policies that govern the public schools.

Guide to County Public School Board of Education

Cherokee Board of Education
The 24th fastest-growing county in the country, Cherokee County’s school system is the largest employer in Cherokee County. Five new schools will open in the next three years (2007-2010) alone.

Clayton Board of Education
Clayton County has full-time music and art specialists at every school, and each high school in the district offers a vocational/technical facility in addition to college-preparatory instruction.

Cobb Board of Education
The Cobb County School System has five magnet programs and three established charter schools. Two new charter schools will open in 2008. Through the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, Cobb County schools have more than 1,015 business partners in education.

Dekalb Board of Education
The first environmentally-friendly school in Georgia is being built in DeKalb County. Arabia Mountain High School will preserve the natural environment, provide multiple outdoor learning areas and offer a proposed environmental curriculum. In addition, a new charter school, Destiny Academy of Excellence, will focus on serving children in the foster care system.

Douglas Board of Education
Douglas County now offers the Parent Portal to allow parents to see their children’s grades, daily attendance and more. The district has recently passed a bond to build two new elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.

Fayette Board of Education
New middle and high school boundaries have been drawn for the 2007-2008 school year, and a new middle school, Bennett Mill has opened.

Forsyth Board of Education
In August 2007, four new schools opened - two middle, one elementary and one high school. The school district estimates that 10 additional schools will be needed between 2010 and 2013 for its projected enrollment of 50,000 students.

Fulton Board of Education
Beginning in the 2007-2008 school year, parents are asked to complete and affidavit and provide proof of residency. A new charter school for 11th and 12th graders, Connected Academy, features a curriculum integrated with real world experience.

Gwinnett Board of Education
Gwinnett County has the largest school district in Georgia. The school system recently earned system-wide accreditation and was specifically praised for its continuous improvement in academic achievement.

Atlanta Public Board of Education
Superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall hosts community fireside chats five times a year as a way to involve parents in their children’s education.

Buford City Board of Education
The Buford school system uses PowerSchool and PowerGrade web-based information systems to increase school-to-home lines of communication. In the 2007-2008 school year, the school system instituted a standardized dress code for all grade levels.

Decatur City Board of Education
A new school tax is expected to generate up to $15 million in proceeds for the City Schools of Decatur over the course of four years. The money will be used for system-wide improvements, such as new gymnasiums and science labs.

Marietta City Board of Education
Three Marietta City elementary schools offered limited choice starting in the fall of 2007 so parents can choose the best school for their children out of the three. Other schools are expected to offer a choice in future school years.
